The Story Behind FITZEN: How Three Gym Bag Headaches Sparked a Towel Revolution
Every great product starts with a problem. Ours started with three.
It was a Tuesday night in late 2024, somewhere between the third set of bench presses and the inevitable search for a missing key, when one of our co-founders muttered a sentence that would eventually become a brand.
"Why is it so hard to find a gym towel that just works?"
That sentence sat in the back of our minds for months. Not because the question was new — every lifter, every athlete, every weekend gym-goer has asked it at some point. It sat with us because we finally decided to do something about it.
This is the story of how three frustrating, mundane, completely avoidable gym-bag headaches turned into FITZEN — Australia's first premium gym towel designed for the way Australians actually train.
The Three Headaches
Headache #1: The Towel That Slips, Slides, and Never Stays Put
We've all been there. You're mid-set, sweat's dripping onto the bench, and your towel is somewhere on the floor, crumpled into a sad, damp ball. You grab it, wipe down, drop it again. Three sets later, you're sliding off a sweat-soaked bench yourself.
The problem isn't you. It's that no one ever designed a gym towel to actually stay on the equipment. Standard towels are flat rectangles. They have no relationship with the bench, the rack, the cable machine, or anything else in the gym. They're just cloth.
We knew there had to be a better way.
Headache #2: The Pocket That Doesn't Exist
Phones, keys, earbuds, lifting straps, a pre-workout shaker — the modern lifter carries a small arsenal. And where do most of us put them during a session? On the floor, on a grimy bench corner, or in a locker that takes you two minutes to open between sets.
Cotton towels have a small loop in the corner. Some have no loop at all. Almost none have a real, secure pocket. We wanted a towel that didn't just wipe sweat but held the things you actually need within arm's reach.
Headache #3: The Material That Betrays You After Wash Five
Buy a cheap gym towel, wash it five times, and watch it slowly disintegrate. The fibres break down. The absorbency drops. The colour fades. By week six, it smells worse than the workout that produced the sweat in the first place.
We learned the hard way that not all microfibre is created equal. Some is made for cleaning cars. Some is made for drying dishes. Almost none of it is made for daily, high-intensity training, washed every other day, and expected to last years.
The Garage Sketch Phase
We started where every Australian side project starts: a garage, a whiteboard, and a few too many post-training coffees.
The first sketch was crude. A rectangle. A pocket on one side. A small magnetic strip on the other. "It looks like a baby burp cloth," one of us said. We laughed. Then we kept drawing.
Over the next three months, we tested 27 different fabric weights, 12 different pocket placements, and 6 different magnetic strengths. We sent prototypes to friends. We sent prototypes to their friends. We sent prototypes to personal trainers, CrossFit coaches, powerlifters, and a stubborn retired rugby player who gave us the most honest feedback of all.
The feedback was consistent: every detail mattered, but two details mattered most.
Detail #1: The Hidden Zip Pocket
The pocket had to be zippered. It had to sit on the towel where it didn't get in the way during a press or a pull. It had to be big enough for a phone — but small enough that the towel still felt like a towel, not a handbag.
We landed on a slim, side-mounted zip pocket that runs along the top edge of the towel. It's invisible when you're using the towel flat. It opens with one hand mid-set. And it holds everything from a phone and keys to a pre-workout packet and a credit card.
This is the Hidden Zip Pocket — one of the two things that makes FITZEN what it is.
Detail #2: The Magnetic Hold
We wanted the towel to attach to the gym equipment itself, not just drape over it. The first attempts used Velcro. Too aggressive. Then snaps. Too loud. Then we tried something most towel brands haven't: a pair of low-profile neodymium magnets, sewn discreetly into a corner of the towel.
The result is Magnetic Hold — a quiet, strong, almost invisible magnetic attachment that lets the towel cling to metal benches, racks, cable machines, and squat bars. No slipping. No flapping. No "where did my towel go" moments.
From Garage to Manufacturing
The leap from prototype to production is where most side projects die. We got lucky — we found a manufacturing partner in Shenzhen who had spent 15 years making technical outdoor fabrics and was willing to work with us on small batches.
We spent four months refining the fabric blend. We wanted:
- A 400 GSM weight that felt substantial but not bulky
- A microfibre composition that absorbed 7x its weight in water
- A weave tight enough to resist pilling but loose enough to feel plush against the skin
- An anti-odour treatment that didn't wash out after three cycles
- A colour palette that looked as good in a high-end boutique gym as it did in a backyard home setup
The first production run of 500 units arrived in May 2026. We hand-tested every single one. (Yes, all 500. Our forearms have never been the same.)
What FITZEN Actually Is
If you've made it this far, you probably want the short version. Here's what FITZEN is:
- A premium gym towel built for the way Australians train — heavy enough for the bench, light enough to throw in a gym bag, and designed to last for years of daily use.
- A towel with a Hidden Zip Pocket that holds your phone, keys, and small essentials within arm's reach, secured with a quality YKK zipper.
- A towel with Magnetic Hold — two discreet neodymium magnets that attach to metal equipment, so the towel stays exactly where you put it.
- A towel made from ultra-plush, anti-odour, high-absorbency microfibre that feels as good as it performs.
- A towel designed in Australia, built with the obsessive detail of a small batch, and sold at a price that respects the customer.
Why Now, and Why Australia
The global gym towel market is full of options. Most of them are bad. A few of them are decent. Almost none of them are designed specifically for the way Australians train — early mornings, hot studios, garage gyms in Brisbane summers, commercial chains in Sydney, beach-side CrossFit boxes in Perth.
We didn't set out to disrupt a $4 billion global towel market. We set out to make the towel we wished we had. If along the way we end up building Australia's most loved gym towel brand, even better.
What's Next
FITZEN launches in late July 2026. We're starting small — limited first batch, direct to consumer, no middlemen, no big-box retailers. We're doing it this way because we want to hear from you. Every piece of feedback, every Instagram DM, every email, every "this pocket saved my keys" story — it all shapes what we build next.
If you want to be among the first to own a FITZEN towel, keep a close eye on our website. We'll be sharing launch details and availability right here as soon as they're ready.
Thanks for reading. Now go hit your next set.
